Thai PM’s Wealth Revealed, Sparks Debate Over Corruption and Power

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared assets worth over $400 million, including luxury handbags and watches. The 38-year-old leader took office in September, becoming the fourth member of her family to lead a Thai government in 20 years. Her declaration includes investments, deposits, and cash, valued at 13.8 billion baht ($400 million). She also owns several high-value items, such as 217 handbags worth $76 million, and property abroad.

The Prime Minister’s net worth is estimated at $258 million, after declaring liabilities of nearly five billion baht. Her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, a telecom billionaire, has a net worth of $2.1 billion, according to Forbes. Analysts say the connection between wealth and power in Thailand is long-standing, with money often used as a justification for military interventions.

This latest disclosure comes after her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, was dismissed by Thailand’s constitutional court due to ethics violations. The Prime Minister’s declaration has sparked debate over corruption and power in Thai politics.
