Thailand Opens Same-Sex Marriage Registration After Marriage Equality Act Takes Effect

Thailand has prepared for the registration of same-sex marriages, commencing on Thursday, following the implementation of the Marriage Equality Act. Deputy government spokesman Karom Ponpornklang stated that the Department of Provincial Administration is ready to assist with the process in all 878 districts nationwide and at Thai embassies abroad.

The department, in collaboration with Bangkok’s district offices and 94 overseas embassies, aims to facilitate a smooth registration process. To support LGBTQ groups, the Interior Ministry has also drawn up an Interior Ministry regulation on family registrations.

Additionally, personnel have been trained on the new law and its proper etiquette for providing services to same-sex couples. The government plans to promote gender equality and diversity, both domestically and internationally. A nationwide event will be held on Thursday to mark the enactment of the marriage equality law, which has been endorsed by His Majesty the King.

Couples planning to register their marriages can fill out an online form prior to the day via a provided link. They must present required identification documents, including ID cards or single status certificates from their home country’s embassy in Thailand. The Marriage Equality Act allows any two individuals 18 years old or older to register their marriage and receive the same benefits and rights as heterosexual couples, subject to parental consent for applicants under 20.
