Thailand Orders Probe into Bangkok Skyscraper Collapse

Thailand has ordered an investigation into the collapse of a 33-storey skyscraper in Bangkok after discovering a link to a Chinese firm involved in its construction. The building, near Chatuchak market, was being constructed by a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development Plc and China Railway Number 10 (Thailand) Ltd.

The earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday caused the building to collapse, killing eight people and injuring many others. Thailand’s deputy prime minister Anutin Charnvirakul has appointed an investigation committee to determine what caused the incident.

Experts say that the type of fault in Myanmar is responsible for the massive shaking felt in Bangkok. The quake was equivalent to 334 atomic bombs and had a significant impact on buildings due to its shallow depth. Thai authorities have confirmed that less than 10% of buildings are earthquake-resistant, highlighting the need for updated building standards.

Rescue efforts continue as thermal imaging drones identify at least 15 people potentially alive under the rubble. However, hopes are beginning to dwindle as many are still missing. The investigation committee is working to report back on its findings within seven days.
