Thailand has repatriated 260 human trafficking victims, including 138 Ethiopians, who were being forced into labor in illegal online operations along its border with Myanmar. The victims came from unspecified “businesses” and were found by the Myanmar rebel group Democratic Karen Buddhist Army.
The Thai army screened the group and verified their nationalities before sending them back to Thailand. Thai authorities renewed efforts to crack down on scam centers last month after Chinese actor Wang Xing was abducted in Thailand and later freed by police.
Thailand has been taking steps to combat human trafficking, including cutting electricity and internet supplies to parts of Myanmar where the illegal compounds operate. The repatriation comes amid a mounting crackdown on the scam centers that have generated billions annually across Southeast Asia.
According to the United Nations, criminal gangs have trafficked hundreds of thousands of people into forced labor in online operations. Thailand’s efforts to combat human trafficking demonstrate its commitment to protecting its citizens and ensuring the region is safe for tourists.
