Director Brady Corbet has issued a response to controversy surrounding his 3x Golden Globe-winning film The Brutalist, which used artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the Hungarian accents of its stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones.
Corbet emphasized that the AI technology was only utilized for fine-tuning certain vowels and letters in Hungarian language dialogue editing, with no English language alteration, resulting from a manual process conducted by his sound team and Respeecher in post-production.
He also clarified that the AI-generated architectural blueprints and finished buildings in the film’s closing sequence were hand-drawn by artists, not created by the AI itself. Corbet stated that the use of AI was intended to speed up the editing process, allowing for faster completion without sacrificing perfection.
In an interview, editor János Varga explained that Brody and Jones had already mastered their Hungarian pronunciation, but AI helped refine their performance further. Varga emphasized that using AI in post-production is not cheating but rather utilizing available tools to enhance creativity.
The controversy surrounding The Brutalist has sparked debate about the role of AI in filmmaking. Many argue that AI-enhanced accents dilute the authenticity of an actor’s performance, while others see it as a necessary tool for achieving creative effects.
