The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in education may seem exciting, especially when it comes to supplementing student learning. However, this technology poses a significant threat if not used responsibly.
While some argue that AI will help students cheat on assignments, the real danger lies in its potential to reshape how students think, learn, and understand truth. AI-powered tools can substitute for human teaching and critical thinking skills, leaving students without the essential mental work that shapes them into capable thinkers.
Writing is a crucial aspect of learning, as it forces the brain to process information, clarify thoughts, and form original positions. Yet, when relying on AI tools, students may miss out on this experience, depriving themselves of new thoughts, ideas, and skills.
Research has shown that over-reliance on AI can lead to lower cognitive function, reduced critical thinking, and even “cognitive debt.” This dulls the capacity for deep, sustained thought and leads to a lack of engagement in learning.
Moreover, AI tools often distort information, creating “hallucinations” – false or misleading claims delivered with confidence. These errors can be subtle but significant, leading to a narrow range of thought and replacing truth-seeking with narrative-shaping.
