For many people, New Year’s resolutions often revolve around cutting back on vices like alcohol. Alcohol Change UK’s “Dry January” campaign has seen a surge in participation over the past decade, with a third of British men planning to give up booze this year. But health warnings about alcohol only tell half the story.
While excessive drinking poses serious risks, such as liver disease and certain types of cancer, moderate drinking can also have benefits for mental health and social connections. The campaign’s focus on abstinence overlooks these positive aspects of enjoying a drink in moderation.
This “dry” approach may lead to temporary relief from hangovers but might not be sustainable or healthy in the long run. As with any New Year’s resolution, it’s essential to strike a balance between responsible drinking and enjoyment.
