The Dark Side of Sunscreen: Separating Fact from Fiction

When it comes to protecting ourselves from the sun, a growing concern has emerged about the potential risks associated with sunscreen use. Some chemicals in traditional sunscreens can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled through sprays, raising questions about their safety.

However, Dr. Jenna Kelsey, a dermatologist at UConn Health, says that while some chemicals may make it into our bloodstream, this is not as alarming as it sounds. According to her, any amount of sunscreen is better than none, and those concerned can opt for physical blockers or mineral sunscreens, which are completely absorbed by the body.

Mineral-based sunscreens, in particular, offer a safe alternative, as they work by sitting on the skin’s surface rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream. Dr. Kelsey recommends sticking to these options for individuals who are worried about the potential risks associated with traditional sunscreen use.
