The Film That Made Me A Lifelong Fan: John Landis’ ‘The Blues Brothers’

I’ve been watching action movies for 48 years, starting when Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” was the highest-grossing film ever during my second year on earth. George Lucas later revolutionized cinema with “Star Wars,” and studios kept pushing boundaries with bigger budgets and wilder stunts.

However, I felt something was missing in the mid-1970s. Films like “Smokey and the Bandit” had upped the ante, but I craved more excitement. That’s when John Landis’ “The Blues Brothers” changed everything.

Landis blended action, comedy, and music in a groundbreaking way. The film is an action-comedy-musical masterpiece that makes you laugh, tap your toes, and marvel at its impressive stuntwork. I was introduced to Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and other soul legends through the film’s use of their music.

While some might question why the film was made, it served as my gateway to a world of black culture. Landis’ tribute to the blues and R&B in an over-the-top action flick was a masterstroke. The mall car chase is a standout set piece that always gets you cheering for the heroes.

Landis’ direction swung a successful formula, making “The Blues Brothers” a classic that I’ll never tire of watching.
