“The Flash” director Andy Muschietti has shed light on why the DC blockbuster underperformed at the box office. Despite grossing $271 million worldwide, the film failed to recoup its massive $200 million budget and marketing costs due to its inability to appeal to all four quadrants of moviegoers.
Muschietti attributed the film’s failure to its limited broad appeal, stating that it “failed” to connect with both men and women across different age groups. In private conversations, Muschietti revealed that many people don’t care about the Flash character as much as other beloved DC icons like Batman or Superman, particularly among young women.
The director’s comments echo Warner Bros.’s desire to create a film that appeals to a wide audience, including older demographics. However, “The Flash” was marred by production issues, lengthy delays, and on-set problems with star Ezra Miller.
