The 2023 film “The Flash” starring Ezra Miller has been deemed a major misstep by many fans and critics alike. Despite initial hype from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, the movie grossed only $271 million worldwide against its reported production budget of $200-$220 million.
In an in-depth interview with director Andy Muschietti, he attributes the film’s failure to factors beyond his control, including a public relations crisis surrounding Ezra Miller. Muschietti believes that the fatigue with superhero movies and the high expectation for appeal to all audiences also contributed to the film’s poor reception.
However, not everyone agrees. The Flash received decent reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (63%) and has defenders who highly recommend it. It’s worth noting that the CW series of the same name was a network success.
Warner Bros. Pictures is reportedly developing a new project featuring Barry Allen, the character from “The Flash,” with director Andy Muschietti set to helm the film. The movie follows Barry as he travels back in time and becomes trapped in a reality where General Zod has returned.
