The Hidden Dangers of Vaping: Know the Risks

Vaping, once marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, has become a growing concern for health experts. Despite being tobacco-free, most vaping products still contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American Lung Association have linked vaping to various serious health risks, including nicotine addiction, lung inflammation, popcorn lung, heart disease risk, weakened immune system, and severe lung injury (EVALI). Vaping can also lead to mood changes, irritability, and withdrawal symptoms.

Teens are especially vulnerable, as nicotine can alter brain development, affecting memory, attention, and learning. Signs of vaping addiction include frequent cravings, anxiety or irritability when unable to vape, hiding habits from family, declining performance in school or work, and persistent coughing or breathing problems.

To quit vaping, several techniques are available, including behavioral counseling, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), prescription medications like bupropion and varenicline, mobile apps and online tools, setting a quit date, and seeking local support. Local resources include the Greenville Family Health Center, Butler County Health Department, Selma Community Wellness Center, and many schools with anti-vaping education and confidential counseling.

Don’t let vaping become a habit – help is available. Reach out to local resources, talk to your doctor, and choose health over habit.
