The Last of Us Season 2 Expands Story, Introduces New Characters

The Last of Us showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have defied convention by choosing to add rather than cut content in their adaptation. In Season 1, this approach resulted in significant new material, including the storylines of Bill and Frank, Henry and Sam, and Kathleen. The season’s finale also provided a flashback to Ellie’s mother, Anna, revealing how Ellie acquired her immunity.

Fast-forwarding two years, Season 2 has followed suit, introducing a number of new elements to the narrative. The first episode sets the tone with Abby’s revenge plot against Joel, who massacred a group of Fireflies outside the hospital in Salt Lake City. This change from the game allows for a deeper exploration of Abby’s motivations and backstory.

The introduction of new characters also provides opportunities for character development. Benjamin, Tommy and Maria’s 5-year-old son, makes his debut in this episode. It marks a significant departure from the game, where Tommy and Maria were childless. Joel’s new role as an uncle highlights his emotional growth, while his relationship with Dina is showcased through an extended scene teaching her about circuit breakers.

The addition of Catherine O’Hara as Joel’s therapist also adds depth to the narrative. It allows for exploration of difficult choices in this world and Joel’s ongoing struggle with guilt over saving Ellie in Season 1. The final scene introduces a plot point not present in the game, setting up what should be an explosive Episode 2.
