Final-round tee times at THE PLAYERS Championship have been moved up due to forecasted severe storms, which could cause a Monday finish if play is delayed. The PGA TOUR has adjusted the schedule to avoid a repeat of last year’s late-night finish.
A significant cold front is expected to reach Northeast Florida on Sunday afternoon, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. According to Stephen Cox, vice president of rules and tournament administration, the storm will be intense and could cause disruptions in play. The PGA TOUR is trying to balance the need for a smooth competition with the risk of severe weather.
The decision comes after the storms have already affected other parts of the country, including Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma, where at least 20 people have died and hundreds of thousands are without power. The tournament’s organizers want to complete the championship on Sunday, but they’re taking precautions to ensure a safe and successful event.
The adjusted tee times will take place in threesomes off the first and 10th holes, from 8-10:01 a.m. ET. Sunset is expected just after 7:30 p.m. local time, providing extra time in case play is delayed. The strong wind gusts that affected Saturday’s afternoon play will also be present on Sunday morning.
