A new study by Oregon State University researchers has found that individuals with high playfulness personalities tend to cope better during crisis situations, such as the pandemic. The study, which surveyed 503 Americans, used the Adult Playfulness Trait Scale (APTS) to measure “playfulness” and found that those with more lighthearted, fun-loving natures were better able to find creative ways to adapt to changes and respond to challenges.
Those with high playfulness scores reported feeling less vulnerable and isolated during the pandemic, but still acknowledging its difficulties. Instead of focusing on what was lost, they viewed obstacles as opportunities for growth and maintained a sense of control over their responses. The study suggests that playfulness may be an inherent trait that can help individuals develop resilience in the face of adversity.
