According to Joan Salge Blake, a clinical professor of nutrition at Boston University’s Sargent College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, this trend may be here to stay.

According to the National Academy of Medicine, adults need at least 7 grams of protein per day, depending on their body weight. Eating enough protein helps muscles rebuild and increases satiety. However, Salge Blake warns that an intense focus on one macronutrient can displace a balanced diet.

“A balanced diet is relatively boring,” she says, “but it’s essential.” This means eating a variety of foods, including nutritious fruits and vegetables. As the protein obsession may stick around, it’s crucial to remember that a well-rounded diet is still the best approach for overall health.
