The beloved children’s picture book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” has been delighting readers for decades. However, its origins are not as straightforward as one might expect.
Author Michael Rosen initially envisioned the story as a carnival-themed tale featuring various characters, including giants and monsters. He planned for the main character to be in a bear suit, which would reveal itself at the end of the journey, prompting other characters to flee in terror.
Fortunately, illustrator Helen Oxenbury did not follow this original concept. Instead, she created a family who embarked on a bear hunt, complete with an older brother, four younger siblings, and their dog. The decision to leave out adult characters was deliberate, allowing children to imagine themselves as the main protagonists of their own adventures.
Oxenbury’s illustrations played a crucial role in bringing the story to life. She employed watercolor for the landscapes and black-and-white for the thinking and waiting scenes, which represented the family’s anticipation and contemplation before overcoming obstacles. The addition of color brought vibrancy to the final sections of the journey, adding an air of uncertainty and leaving room for interpretation.
Rosen has since revealed that he was initially perplexed by Oxenbury’s original illustrations, finding them puzzling. However, this ambiguity adds a layer of depth to the story, allowing readers to ponder what is real and what is imagined.
“We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” has sold over four million copies worldwide since its publication in 1989. Its enduring popularity can be attributed to its unique blend of imagination, adventure, and subtle storytelling. With their upcoming book “Oh Dear, Look What I Got!”, Rosen and Oxenbury continue to captivate young readers with their innovative storytelling and timeless illustrations.
