Three main groups of guests arrive at the hotel, each with their own motivations for attending: the Ratliff family, seeking “wellness” and bonding; three longtime friends Jaclyn, Kate, and Laurie, looking to recapture past glories in their 40s; and Rick and his young girlfriend Chelsea, an unlikely pair amidst the posh atmosphere. Among the hotel staff are returning characters like Belinda and newcomers Gaitok, who find themselves caught up in the guests’ antics.
Creator Mike White’s ability to build tension is unparalleled, making even luxury settings feel fraught with anxiety. This season focuses on facades and artificiality, as the characters put on fronts that lead to truths they’d rather not face. The cast delivers standout performances, particularly Patrick Schwarzenegger as a despicable trust fund kid.
As the world becomes increasingly dark, “The White Lotus” reflects this by teetering on the edge of incivility and bloodshed. Each moment is a delicate balance between humor and cringe-worthy moments, making for an uncomfortable viewing experience that mirrors our own darker selves.
