The Sphere in Las Vegas is set to transport 10,000 visitors into the world of “The Wizard of Oz” next month. The venue’s massive LED screen and immersive, real-world elements will create a unique experience that blends classic film with cutting-edge technology.
According to Glenn Derry, executive VP of MSG Ventures, the production team has incorporated physical effects at a scale never seen before in a movie theater. The tornado that hits Kansas will be accompanied by wind whipping at visitors’ faces, leaves flying in front of them, and bolts of lightning piercing through fog and swirling haze.
The film’s iconic scenes will be reimagined with massive sets and special effects, including towering flames and smoke to introduce the Wizard, and actual winged creatures that will fly over the audience. The production team has developed custom systems to create these effects in a venue of this size and scope.
Sphere is producing an AI-enhanced version of “The Wizard of Oz” as part of its first major theatrical release. The film’s score has also been re-recorded, adding to the immersive experience. Chairman James Dolan envisioned a unique experience that would leave audiences with dropped jaws, and his vision has come to fruition.
With partnerships from Warner Bros. Discovery, Google, and Magnopus, Sphere is confident that its production will create an unforgettable experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else on Earth.
