At least four people have died as thousands of Palestinians rushed into a United Nations warehouse in Gaza in search of food. The World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Deir al-Balah was breached, with many entering through the gates, causing chaos and panic.
The WFP warned of “alarming and deteriorating conditions on the ground” due to the 80-day blockade of food assistance. The UN special coordinator for the Middle East, Sigrid Kaag, said people facing famine in Gaza have lost hope.
Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is severe, with many struggling to access basic necessities like food. Bakeries operated by the WFP have closed, and prices are soaring for limited food available in shops and markets.
On Tuesday, an Israeli military helicopter was seen firing flares, and at least two people were killed and 48 injured in a separate incident at a food distribution point. Witnesses said Israeli forces opened fire after crowds of Palestinians broke through the fences around a US-backed group’s site.
The new system for food distribution, backed by Israel, has been rejected by the UN and other humanitarian organizations, citing concerns over its ability to meet the needs of Gaza’s 2.3 million people. The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said the model is “a waste of resources” and a distraction from “atrocities”.
The crisis in Gaza highlights the devastating impact of an 11-week siege and a tight Israeli blockade on the population. The international community must work to provide aid to alleviate the suffering of those affected by this humanitarian crisis.
