A three-day assault by Sudanese paramilitaries, known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has resulted in over 200 deaths and hundreds of injuries or disappearances south of Khartoum. The Emergency Lawyers network claims that the RSF opened fire on fleeing villagers, while the government puts the death toll at more than double that figure.
The attacks took place in the White Nile state villages of al-Kadaris and al-Khelwat, 100km from the capital. Witnesses reported thousands fleeing, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson stated that “horrifying reports” included widespread rape and forced displacement.
RSF fighters allegedly subjected unarmed civilians to executions, kidnappings, and looting over three days. The group has been accused of war crimes since the conflict began in April 2023, including genocide allegations by the US for targeting non-Arab minorities.
The ongoing conflict has killed tens of thousands, uprooted more than 12 million people, and created a massive humanitarian crisis. Fighting has intensified as the army attempts to reclaim control of Khartoum from the paramilitaries.
Humanitarian organizations, including UNICEF, have reported alarming instances of children being abducted and subjected to violence. The UN human rights office stated that “entrenched impunity” fueled mass human rights abuses across Sudan, calling for increased accountability and international intervention.
