Thousands of North Korean Troops Killed in Ukraine Conflict

North Korea has suffered nearly 40% casualties in its troops fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine’s Kursk region over the past three months, officials claim. An estimated 4,000 out of 11,000 sent troops were battle casualties, with around 1,000 killed by mid-January. These losses are unsustainable for North Korea, and the wounded and their fate remain unclear.

The high cost of President Vladimir Putin’s ally, Kim Jong Un, is evident as he seeks to help Ukraine evict Russian forces from the region ahead of any ceasefire negotiations. The introduction of North Korean troops in October has contributed to Ukraine’s steady push back on its gains in Kursk.

North Korean soldiers appear unprepared for modern warfare and vulnerable to Ukrainian drones. Despite this, they pose a significant threat to Ukrainian fighters. However, their numbers are dwindling due to heavy losses.
