A state-owned gambling operator, Norsk Tipping, mistakenly told thousands of Norwegians they had won life-changing sums in a Eurojackpot draw. The error occurred during the conversion of prize amounts from euros to Norwegian kroner.
According to Norsk Tipping, the company’s website and mobile app displayed inflated sums due to a manual error in the game engine’s code. The amount was multiplied by 100 instead of being divided by 100. No incorrect payouts were made, but the mistake triggered criticism from customers, regulators, and the Norwegian minister of culture.
The company’s CEO, Tonje Sagstuen, announced her resignation on Sunday after an emergency meeting with the ministry of culture. She stated that she would miss working with her colleagues but was confident in the improvement processes they had initiated. Several Norwegians told media outlets they had begun celebrating before discovering the mistake, including a couple who planned to buy cars or take holidays.
This is not the first time Norsk Tipping has faced scrutiny due to technical issues. The company will continue to investigate the incident and contact media for further comment.
