Fort Worth residents are in for a bright future as thousands of solar-powered streetlights are set to illuminate several neighborhoods across the city. A joint effort between Fonroche Lighting America and Florida-based company Streetleaf, 3,429 solar-powered streetlights will be installed by 2026.
The first batch of 1,000 solar lights is expected to be installed in neighborhoods such as Overton South, South Hemphill Heights, Westcreek Central, Polytechnic Heights, Highland Hills, Wedgwood East, and more. Fonroche’s partnership with the city has resulted in $12 million being invested, with funds coming from federal pandemic relief.
The solar streetlights are expected to bring significant cost savings, with estimates suggesting around $300,000 annually. The average cost to install a traditional streetlight is $13,000, while solar lights come in at around $6,000. CEO Hocine Benaoum praises the community’s positive feedback, saying “feedback from the community was excellent.”
Streetleaf and Fonroche aim to address energy demands and costs in Fort Worth by utilizing their technology. The company has also received positive remarks from members of the community, including those with faulty street lighting.
The city plans to finish installing all 3,400 solar-powered streetlights by 2026, marking a significant shift towards sustainable energy solutions. With the new installations, Fort Worth officials expect to save $300,000 annually on electricity costs.
