Thousands of Starbucks workers across the US have walked off the job, joining a nationwide strike that began on Friday. The employees are demanding a fair contract with livable wages and an end to unfair labor practices.
The union, which represents Starbucks employees, has been negotiating with the company for nine months but was met with a proposed contract that offered minimal pay increases. The union claims this is insufficient, saying it would not cover the rising cost of living in areas like the Bay Area.
Baristas are also protesting against what they call “union busting” by the company, which they claim has fired workers and retaliated against those who tried to unionize. The strike, dubbed “Strikemas,” has led to store closures during the busiest holiday season for Starbucks.
The strike is expected to end on Tuesday, but the union is asking customers not to buy from Starbucks while its workers are on strike to put pressure on top executives. The union wants answers and is taking drastic measures as a last resort.
