A massive anti-government protest has erupted in central Belgrade, with tens of thousands gathering to condemn President Aleksandar Vucic and his ruling party over a fatal railway station roof collapse. The incident occurred on November 1, resulting in 15 deaths and three injuries.
Opposition leaders blame the accident on shoddy construction, citing government corruption and nepotism. However, the ruling coalition denies these charges, with Vucic vowing to hold those responsible accountable.
The protesters held a minute-long silence to honor the victims, while others displayed banners reading “Vucic, thief!” and “You have blood on your hands.” Many also expressed frustration with corruption and nepotism, demanding an end to such practices since 2012 when Vucic’s party took power.
Students from state universities in Belgrade have been protesting for weeks, blocking traffic to commemorate the victims and demand the release of documents related to the renovation. The protests aim to push for greater transparency and accountability.
