In Belgrade and parts of Serbia, thousands of students and teachers protested against government corruption, closing schools, bookstores, and theatres. The demonstrations began after a railway station roof collapse killed 15 people in November, with protesters blaming poor construction and nepotism. While the government denies fault, prosecutors have indicting 13 individuals, including an ex-minister, on charges tied to the collapse. Students planned to march across Belgrade. In Novi Sad, prosecutors have indicted but not yet accepted the charges. Theatres and bookstores in some areas refused to show plays or operate. Some cafes kept their doors open, offering free food and lowering prices. Meanwhile, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic held a counter-rally later in the day, though he maintains only ceremonial roles.
