Thousands Protest in Serbia Over Deadly Train Disaster

Protesters in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second city, blocked three bridges on the Danube River on Saturday to express their discontent over a deadly train disaster that killed 15 people last November. The protests are the latest in a series of demonstrations against corruption within President Aleksandar Vucic’s government and mismanagement.

The disaster at a railway station in Novi Sad was initially blamed on construction errors, but prosecutors have charged only 13 people so far. However, many believe that corruption played a role and opposition parties are calling for investigations into the government’s handling of the tragedy.

Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigned this week, becoming the highest-ranking official to step down over the disaster. The move has sparked widespread protests in Novi Sad, with thousands blocking bridges and demanding action from the government.

President Vucic claims he will not step down due to popular discontent but protesters say they will continue their demands until their goals are met. “Our goal is to have all our demands fulfilled so that we can finally start to live in a state of law,” said protester Ana Hasinbegovic.

The protests come as the government faces increasing criticism over corruption, media freedoms, and ties with organized crime. The situation remains tense, with Vucic’s grip on power questioned by many.
