Three Lifestyle Factors Key to Preventing Dementia

A recent review of data from over 20,000 older adults suggests that only three lifestyle factors can significantly prevent dementia. The key factors identified were:

1. Not having a hobby
2. Maintaining a healthy weight (being obese was found to increase the risk)
3. Being physically active, especially after age 60

Researchers also found that Americans living in the South were more likely to develop dementia, even when adjusting for income and other factors.

The study, conducted by the RAND Corporation, suggests that learning about risk factors can help individuals take preventative measures to reduce their risk of developing dementia. Experts emphasize the importance of physical activity, social engagement, and healthy habits to maintain brain health across the lifespan.

In addition, the study highlights the need for accessible and affordable diagnostic tools to facilitate early detection and treatment of dementia. By understanding these key lifestyle factors, individuals can take proactive steps to reduce their risk of developing this condition.

While nearly 10% of adults over 65 may already have dementia, the number is expected to grow to 12 million by 2040 if current trends continue.
