A powerful earthquake struck a holy city in Tibet, killing 126 people and injuring 188 others. Relief teams in western China are now focused on resettling survivors after searching for any remaining victims. Over 46,000 people have been relocated due to the quake, which left many homes uninhabitable or unsafe.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near a monastery of Tibetan Buddhism’s second-highest figure, the Panchen Lama. Tibetans in neighboring India and Nepal held vigils for the victims, with some carrying signs calling for aid to help those affected. The Chinese government has said it will rebuild under its leadership.
Relief efforts are underway, including the delivery of tents, quilts, stoves, and other essential items. Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing visited survivors and called for accelerating post-disaster reconstruction to ensure they can be safe this winter.
The quake was magnitude 7.1, with aftershocks recorded across a high-altitude plain near Mount Everest. China’s earthquake center said the epicenter was 75 kilometers from the border with Nepal, where the shaking sent people running out of their homes.
