Tiger Woods made his highly anticipated debut in the TGL (Technology-Infused Golf League) indoor golf league, but it was a rocky start for the golf legend. Woods’ Jupiter Links GC took on LA Golf Club in the second night of the new league’s competition, and despite being the key draw, Woods couldn’t rally his team to victory.
The inaugural match began with Woods taking the ceremonial tee shot, but he struggled to find his footing throughout the early stretch of holes. Meanwhile, Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala led L.A. Golf Club’s charge, riding a combination of precise approaches, long putts, and Jupiter mistakes to an 8-1 lead by halftime.
As the match progressed, Woods’ team continued to struggle, with Kevin Kisner providing some comic relief with his impressive sand save attempt that went viral on social media. Theegala ultimately closed out the match with a stunning tee shot, securing L.A.’s dominant victory in TGL’s two-match history.
The TGL’s format has raised concerns about its suitability for traditional golf fans, who may find it too lighthearted and lacking in seriousness compared to PGA Tour events. The league’s attempts to blend humor with golf coverage have fallen flat so far, with some segments featuring interviews with sponsor executives coming across as awkward.
Despite the setbacks, TGL has managed to bring attention to the sport of golf by moving other major events, such as college basketball games, to ESPN News. The league will return next week with a new match between Xander Schauffele’s New York Golf Club and Justin Thomas’ Atlanta Drive Golf Club.
