Tigers Acquire Injured Reliever Paul Sewald from Guardians

The Detroit Tigers have acquired veteran right-handed reliever Paul Sewald from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, ahead of the MLB trade deadline. The 35-year-old has been on the injured list since mid-July due to a right shoulder strain but is expected to return by early September.

Sewald, who missed over two months with the same injury, boasts a $10 million mutual option for the 2026 season and has a proven track record of success in relief. He has a 4.70 ERA in 15⅓ innings across 18 appearances, earning two saves in four opportunities.

While Sewald’s fastball velocity has declined over the past four years, his sweeper remains an effective pitch that can help the Tigers’ bullpen. With a whiff rate of 30.8% and above-average marks in walk rate (6.5%) and strikeout rate (29%), Sewald could provide a significant boost to the team’s pitching staff.

Sewald has a 4.11 ERA over his nine-year MLB career, with stints with the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Guardians. The Tigers designated right-hander Matt Manning for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster for Sewald.

The Tigers’ bullpen ranks 29th in MLB with a 22.7% whiff rate, making Sewald’s addition a welcome relief. With Sewald expected to return soon, he will look to capitalize on his strengths and contribute to the team’s success.
