Detroit Tigers second baseman Colt Keith gave credit where it was due after a critical loss to the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Keith made two costly mistakes that ultimately cost his team the game. In the second inning, he committed a brain freeze while trying to field a grounder, which should have ended the inning. The mistake allowed the Mariners to take an early lead.
“I tried to come in and get it with one hand, and the hop beat me,” Keith said. “I knew how many outs there were. I just opened up and for some reason, turned all the way. Just a messed-up play and it hurt us.”
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal also had his share of issues, but he took responsibility for not making a key pitch against Victor Robles, which led to another Mariners run.
“Tough game,” Skubal said. “You can’t let outside things, things out of your control, impact who you are on the mound.”
Manager A.J. Hinch attributed Keith’s mistakes to a learning lesson, saying he just spun and went the other way, ending up with no play. Keith was involved in another critical moment in the ninth inning, where he made an indecision that prevented him from scoring.
Despite the losses, Keith had a positive series against the Mariners, going 3-for-7 while seeing the ball better.
“It’s frustrating,” Hinch said. “It is a good series win, but we feel like we could have won if we do one or two more things correctly.”
