A new social media platform, Lemon8, has gained immense popularity in the US as users anticipate a ban on TikTok. Lemon8 functions similarly to TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest, offering photo/video editing and sharing services. The app is owned by ByteDance, the same Chinese company that owns TikTok.
Lemon8 was released in Asian markets in 2020 and launched in the US in February 2023. Despite being developed and owned by the same parent company as TikTok, Lemon8 is not explicitly named in the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Control Applications App, which would implement the ban on TikTok.
However, due to a new legislation signed into law by President Joe Biden, ByteDance may be required to sell or shut down its apps, including Lemon8 and other services. If this happens, both Lemon8 and TikTok could become unavailable in the US.
Another popular video-editing app, CapCut, owned by ByteDance, is also at risk of being banned on January 19th due to the legislation. As of Tuesday, CapCut was the top photo and video app downloaded from the Apple App Store with over 1 billion downloads from Google Play Store.
