TikTok Returns to US After 12-Hour Downtime, Soothing Creators’ Fears

TikTok’s services were restored in the US after a 12-hour outage, easing concerns among creators who rely heavily on the platform for income. The app’s uncertain future remains unclear, prompting some creators to diversify their online sales.

Creators like Kimberly Balance, who runs a luxury consignment goods business on TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms, have seen significant revenue from the app. She had been set to host a live shopping show on Saturday, but after a meeting with TikTok’s luxury sales manager was canceled, her earnings took a hit.

TikTok’s online marketplace has become a prime source of revenue for creators since its launch in 2023, and the platform also offers an affiliate program. However, the app takes a cut of each transaction, and some creators worry that a ban could hurt their finances.

Despite the uncertainty, many creators remain committed to TikTok. Nadya Okamoto, founder of menstrual-care brand August, said she is relieved that the app has returned online but plans to develop a contingency plan to reduce her reliance on it.

As the future of TikTok remains unclear, some creators are taking steps to diversify their online sales channels. Balance plans to expand her business to Instagram and possibly launch a YouTube channel.
