Timothée Chalamet Brings Bob Dylan to Minneapolis

Timothée Chalamet brought his portrayal of Bob Dylan to Minneapolis for a special preview screening and after-party. The star arrived at both The Main Cinema and the Varsity Theater, where he jumped onstage with the University of Minnesota Marching Band and flashed an “M” sign with his hands. Fans swarmed outside both venues, hoping for a glimpse of the actor.

Chalamet had previously visited the state twice to research his performance in the biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which is set from 1961 to 1965. He met with locals in Duluth and Hibbing, including at Hibbing High school, where he rehearsed a play with students. The actor also explored Bob Dylan’s childhood homes, including both his first house in Duluth and his family’s later house in Hibbing.

The film focuses on the period during which Dylan experienced a meteoric rise to fame but chafed at the expectations foisted upon him as a folksinger. Chalamet was particularly moved by seeing Dylan’s childhood homes and meeting with Bill Pagel, who owns both properties. He said that these experiences helped him understand Bob’s sense of pre-destiny and drive.

After the screening, invitees made their way to the Varsity Theater for an after-party that included renditions of “Like a Rolling Stone” and “All Along the Watchtower.” The scene was worlds away from what Dylan would have known during his brief but impactful tenure on the Minneapolis folk scene.
