A small asteroid, measuring about 27 inches wide, was detected by astronomers at the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona, on a collision course with Earth. The European Space Agency described it as a “completely harmless event” that will produce a “nice fireball” in the sky over northern Siberia. According to physicist Richard Moissl, this is the fourth time this year an asteroid has been designated as an imminent impactor, hours before its predicted impact on Earth’s atmosphere. The detection was made possible by sensors and radars operated by the European Space Agency and others around the world that track incoming asteroids.
