Tiny Brain Model Reveals Link Between Herpes and Alzheimer’s

Tufts University researchers created a 3D model of a human brain in a polymer shell and subjected it to a simulated concussion using a spring-loaded platform. The test revealed that herpes virus-infected brain tissue, when exposed to the impact, developed signs of inflammation, amyloid plaques, and dying neurons – all hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. In contrast, uninfected brain tissues recovered with minimal damage. This study connects two previously linked risk factors for Alzheimer’s, providing evidence that a common microbe may be a contributing cause of this most common form of dementia.
