A miniature red model house created by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg is set to be launched into space on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral at 1:11 a.m. Wednesday. The Moonhouse, which measures just 12 centimeters in length and width, will hitch a ride to the moon on a lunar lander operated by Japanese company ispace.
Genberg has been wanting to put his house on the moon for 25 years, describing it as “a crazy, maybe idiotic, but poetic thought.” The house is made of aluminum and features space-certified paint. Genberg’s signature art project has already traveled the world, including a trip to the International Space Station.
The project costs around $620,000 to $888,000, with 70 people donating funds for its completion. CEO Julien-Alexandre Lamamy hopes that the artwork will “expand our planet and future” by extending human life into space. The Moonhouse is expected to land on the moon in about four months, where it will be left standing for thousands of years if all goes according to plan.
