Toledo Medical Center Expands Organ Transplant Program with Pancreas Transplants

The University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC), northwest Ohio’s only organ transplantation center, has expanded its program to include pancreas transplants. The first dual pancreas-kidney recipient, Taylor Iceman, 39, from tiny Lucas, Ohio, recently underwent the procedure five weeks ago and is already experiencing benefits.

Iceman was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 12 and had been battling it for over two decades. His health declined sharply about five to seven years ago due to complications from his condition, including kidney failure. He began dialysis but later learned he was a candidate for a pancreas-kidney transplant.

Iceman’s surgery was successful, with no setbacks after more than a month of recovery. Dr. Kunal Yadav, the physician who procured the organs and led the transplant team, said the procedure is considered a success. Iceman’s blood sugars are normal, his kidney function is great, and he has been declared diabetes-free.

UTMC received approval to perform pancreas transplants in December and started performing kidney transplants in 1972. Pancreas transplants are most commonly done for patients with Type 1 diabetes. The center’s new program aims to provide improved access to this life-saving treatment for those in need.

Dr. Yadav said the expansion of the transplantation program will make a significant difference, particularly for young patients who can benefit from simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants. This procedure replaces both the organ responsible for diabetes and one commonly damaged by it, offering hope for improved outcomes.
