Tom Cruise has been honored with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award, the Navy’s highest honor outside of the department. The award was presented to him during a ceremony in London on Tuesday.
The DPS Award recognizes Cruise’s contribution and dedication to the US Navy through his film work, which has increased public awareness and appreciation for the Navy’s personnel and their sacrifices. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said that Cruise’s work has inspired generations to serve in the Navy and Marine Corps.
Cruise, known for starring in the 1986 classic “Top Gun” and its sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” has been a source of inspiration to many sailors who have served or currently serve. He credits his cast and crew for bringing his performances to life, saying that he is just one part of a team.
The Navy says that Cruise’s film work sparked a surge in Navy pilot recruitment at the time. In 2020, Cruise and “Top Gun” producer Jerry Bruckheimer were named Honorary Naval Aviators by the department.
