Tom Hanks’ Daughter Opens Up About Family Abuse in New Memoir

Tom Hanks’ daughter, E.A. Hanks, is set to release a memoir that details her childhood and alleged abuse by her late mother, Susan Dillingham. The book, “The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road,” follows E.A.’s solo cross-country journey of self-reflection, including her discovery of her mother’s past.

According to an excerpt published in People, E.A. writes about a turbulent upbringing, the aftermath of her parents’ divorce, and her quest to understand her mother. The memoir reveals that E.A.’s parents divorced in 1987 after nine years of marriage, with Hanks gaining primary custody of their two children, including E.A.

E.A. shares that she remembers only two instances of her parents being in the same room, at her brother Colin’s high school graduation and hers. She describes her father as “traumatized” by his childhood and family dynamics, while noting that the love between her parents was strained due to their shared struggles with mental illness and addiction.

The memoir also touches on E.A.’s experience of living in a household plagued by violence and neglect. She writes about the physical and emotional abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, which led her to move away from home during her teenage years.

E.A.’s father has been supportive of her memoir, telling People that he wants his daughter to “tell the truth and move forward.” The book is set to be released on Tuesday from Simon & Schuster.
