Tom Hanks’ daughter E.A. Hanks is opening up about her difficult childhood in a new memoir. Born in 1982, E.A. joined her older brother Colin, who was born five years earlier. The family, which included Tom and his then-wife Susan Dillingham, relocated to Sacramento from Los Angeles when the couple divorced in 1985.
E.A.’s mother struggled with mental health issues, which led to a tumultuous home life. “I would visit my dad and stepmother on weekends and summers, but from 5 to 14 years old, I was a Sacramento girl,” E.A. wrote. Her mother’s behavior became increasingly erratic, with episodes of paranoia and delusion. The family’s living situation deteriorated, with the backyard overgrown and the house smelling of smoke.
A particularly traumatic incident involving physical abuse prompted E.A. to move to Los Angeles during her seventh-grade year. Her custody arrangement changed, with E.A. now living in L.A. and visiting Sacramento on weekends and summers. E.A.’s memoir, “The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road,” explores her journey of self-discovery and learning more about her late mother’s past during a 2019 road trip from L.A. to Florida.
