NBC News is transitioning its anchor position, and veteran correspondent Tom Llamas will take over as the new lead of NBC Nightly News beginning June 2. Current anchor Lester Holt will sign off on May 30 to join Dateline.
To introduce this change, NBC News launched a marketing campaign focusing on the legacy of Nightly News and highlighting Llamas’ experience as both a correspondent and fill-in anchor. Additionally, Llamas anchors Top Story on the NBC News Now streaming service.
Llamas joined NBC News in 2021 after working at ABC News for years. He has been a frequent presence on major events coverage, including election night and international stories like Pope Francis’ death.
Under Llamas’ leadership, Nightly News will be anchored by just its fourth anchor in the last 40 years, making him the first to host both linear and streaming newscasts simultaneously.
