Tonga’s Home Reef Volcano Erupts, Warning Issued for Mariners

A recent eruption at the Home Reef Volcano has triggered a significant crater and ejected large rocks, according to satellite images taken on February 8. The eruption has also raised an ash plume near the vent.

The Tonga Geological Services Volcano Watch Team issued a public notice today, warning mariners to stay at least 2 nautical miles away from Home Reef until further notice due to low-risk volcanic activity that poses no threat to nearby communities of Vava’u and Ha’apai. However, they caution all mariners to remain cautious.

Monitoring of the volcano’s activity is ongoing, with increased thermal activity detected since the last report. Satellite images show a 78-meter crater, approximately 4,350 square meters in area, with rocks ejected from the site. The team advises mariners to exercise caution while tracking volcanic activity closely to ensure public safety.
