Tony Awards 2023 Highlights Include Record-Breaking Wins and Iconic Moments

The 75th Annual Tony Awards saw a star-studded night of performances and surprise wins. The big winner was “Maybe Happy Ending,” which took home six prizes, including best musical and best actor for Darren Criss.

Cynthia Erivo kicked off the ceremony as host, delivering a heartfelt opening number that included a nod to her viral “holding space” meme with Ariana Grande. She also paid tribute to Broadway being her home, saying “There’s no place like home.”

Actress Sarah Snook won best leading actress in a play for her one-person show “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” which she performed as 26 different characters. In an interview after the show, Snook expressed gratitude for her “Succession” co-stars, calling them a “really special group of people.”

The ceremony also featured performances by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr., who took the stage to celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Hamilton.” The show’s star, Audra McDonald, brought the audience to its feet with her emotional rendition of “Rose’s Turn” from “Gypsy.”

Other notable winners included Nicole Scherzinger, who won best leading actress in a musical for her stunning performance of “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” and Cole Escola, who became the first nonbinary performer to win the Tony Award for best leading actor in a play.

Escola’s acceptance speech was filled with gratitude and humor, thanking their mom and friends, including Tebow from Grindr. They also joked about not being “played out” with Eleanor Roosevelt comedy ideas.
