Tony Blair to Lead Post-War Gaza Authority?

Sir Tony Blair is in talks to lead a transitional authority in post-war Gaza, backed by the US, UN, and Gulf nations. The proposal aims to establish a governing body before handing control back to Palestinians. Blair has assured that his administration would not displace Gaza’s people.

The plan, modelled on international transitions like East Timor and Kosovo, would initially be based in Egypt. It seeks a UN mandate for five years as the “supreme political and legal authority” in Gaza. After stabilizing Gaza, the authority would enter the territory alongside a multinational force.

Blair has previously served as Middle East envoy and focused on bringing economic development to Palestine, working towards a two-state solution. This comes after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated his readiness to work with world leaders for a two-state peace plan.

The proposal is in contrast to Donald Trump’s previous plans to take “a long-term ownership position” over Gaza, which were later dropped due to international outcry. The US and Israel rejected an Arab plan allowing the 2.1 million Palestinians to stay in place, while a French-Saudi-led conference proposed a transitional administrative committee for Gaza.

The UK has recently recognized Palestine, along with several other countries, reiterating calls for a two-state solution. This move was criticized by Israel and the US as a “reward for Hamas.”
