Tony Roberts, a veteran actor known for his collaborations with Woody Allen and numerous appearances on Broadway, has passed away at the age of 85 due to complications from lung cancer. Born in New York in the late 1930s, Roberts began his career on stage, earning Tony nominations for productions such as “How Now, Dow Jones” and “Play It Again, Sam”. He went on to star alongside Allen in six films, including “Annie Hall”, with their professional relationship also developing into a lifelong friendship.
Roberts’ film credits also included roles in classics like “Serpico” and “The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three”, as well as TV appearances in crime series “Rosetti And Ryan” and the sitcom “The Thorns”. He also had four guest appearances on “Law & Order”.
Despite his long association with Woody Allen, Roberts remained steadfast in his defense of his friend, refusing to comment on allegations of sexual assault despite publisher requests. Instead, he self-published his memoir, “Do You Know Me?”, which detailed their friendship and career.
In his later years, Roberts continued to act in a range of projects, including mainstream films like “Dirty Dancing” and the TV movie remake, alongside appearances in oddball comedy specials.
