Born in Maine and raised in New York City, Lavin began her career in show business singing in nightclubs and ensembles. She earned a Tony Award for best actress in a play for Neil Simon’s “Broadway Bound” in 1987.

Lavin starred in several Broadway productions, including Paul Rudnick’s comedy “The New Century,” the concert show “Songs & Confessions of a One-Time Waitress,” and Donald Margulies’ “Collected Stories.” She also appeared on TV shows such as “Barney Miller,” “Sean Saves the World,” and “9JKL.”

In addition to her acting career, Lavin was an advocate for working-class families. Her portrayal of Alice Hyatt in “Alice” made her a role model for many women who identified with her character’s struggles.
