Top 50% Own 98% of US Wealth, Leaving Bottom Half with Just 2%

A new visualization from the Voronoi app provides a striking breakdown of America’s wealth distribution. The data, sourced from the Federal Reserve as of Q3, 2024, shows that there are two distinct types of households in the US: those who own most of the wealth and those who do not.

The top half of households, which include the rich and middle-class families, own approximately $156 trillion, or 98% of the total net worth. In contrast, the bottom half of households, consisting mainly of poorer families, own just $4 trillion, accounting for a mere 2%.

Breaking down further, the top 1% of households, which comprise only about 0.8% of the population, owns an impressive $49 trillion, or nearly one-third of the total wealth. The richest 0.1% holds around half of this amount, with just 136,000 households controlling over $24 trillion.

The Federal Reserve has also provided some insight into demographics and thresholds for each wealth band. For instance, to be in the top 10%, a household must have at least $1.92 million in net worth, while the minimum required to enter the top 0.1% is around $62 million.

This data highlights the growing gap between the rich and the poor in America, with the wealthy continually increasing their share of national wealth.
